PEADATO FOUNDATION EMPOWERS OVER 600 YOUNG GIRLS AT ADAGYA D/A JHS IN COMMEMORATING MENSTRUAL HYGIENE DAY

PEADATO FOUNDATION marked this year’s Menstrual Hygiene Day with young girls at the Adagya D/A Basic and Junior High School. The event, held in the Ashanti region, specifically in the Bosomtwe district, brought together young girls from communities such as Adagya, Esereso, Feyeasi, and Aputogya, who attend the Adagya D/A School, to explore themes related to menstrual hygiene.

Lack of access to quality sanitary products is a significant public health and educational issue affecting millions of young girls globally, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. In many African countries, 1 in 10 girls misses school during menstruation due to a lack of access to menstrual products, poor sanitation, or social stigma. This adds up to 20% of a school year. In Sub-Saharan Africa, over 65% of girls do not even have access to sanitary pads. (UNESCO, 2022). Statistics from UNICEF Ghana say that about 95% of Schoolgirls do not report to school due to menstruation-related issues. These pressing issues have long-term implications on these young ones and the Nation as a whole. Educational setbacks due to absenteeism limit career and life opportunities, and the cycle of poverty is perpetuated as girls are denied the education and confidence to reach their full potential. Additionally, Gender inequality is deepened when menstruation becomes a barrier to participation in school and public life.

In celebration of Menstrual Hygiene Day this year, PEADATO FOUNDATION organized a menstrual health outreach program at Adagya School, intending to empower young girls with knowledge on menstrual hygiene management and ensure their access to basic sanitary products. This initiative forms part of the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to promoting the health, dignity, and educational rights of young girls in rural and underserved communities.

Health Professionals from A1 hospital delivered a comprehensive and interactive session on menstrual hygiene. Topics included the menstrual cycle, personal hygiene practices, managing menstruation at school, and overcoming stigma and limitations. Students were allowed to ask
questions in a safe and supportive environment, fostering openness and understanding. They were educated on the importance of menstrual hygiene, debunked myths and misconceptions surrounding menstruation, and boosted their confidence and self-esteem of these adolescent girls.
This contributes to our efforts to reduce school absenteeism caused by menstrual challenges, thereby championing Sustainable Development Goals 3 and 4. Thus, Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being, which aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all, while Goal 4 focuses on ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education for all and promoting lifelong learning.

50 Boxes of Sanitary Pads were distributed to the young girls to support their menstrual hygiene needs. The total number of girls reached was over six hundred students. They were encouraged to embrace their womanhood with pride and were inspired to remain confident and focused in their educational pursuits despite menstrual challenges.

The menstrual hygiene program at Adagya D/A School was a remarkable success, leaving a lasting impact on the girls who participated. PEADATO FOUNDATION remains committed to empowering young girls with the knowledge, confidence, and resources to manage menstruation with dignity. Teachers expressed appreciation and highlighted the positive behavioral changes expected as a result of the program, and we at Peadato Foundation appreciate all stakeholders at Adagya D/A Basic and Junior High School for their acceptance of us hosting such a program with
their institution. We also express our profound gratitude to PEADATO LIMITED COMPANY, all volunteers, health professionals, and donors who made this outreach possible.
